Updating an older wine cellar

If you are lucky enough to have a wine cellar in your house, or a basement or cellar which is currently being used as a wine cellar, it has a lot of things going for it in terms of wine storage. Wine needs to be stored in a cool environment, away from light and a cellar should easily provide this.

There are some factors however which may not be optimal, and good reasons why you could consider updating your wine cellar.

Temperature
For long term storage, wine should be kept at not only a cool, but a constant temperature. While cellars are often cool, there will naturally be some variation in the temperature of the room, and if this is significant this can cause the wine to deteriorate prematurely.

Humidity
The humidity of a basement can vary wildly, depending on the type of basement, the age of the house, and the local area. For storing wine, a slightly damp environment is preferred to stop the corks in the wine bottles drying out. This is so that the wine is not exposed to oxygen through a dry cork which would cause the wine to spoil.

Appearance
Many older wine cellars can suffer slightly from neglect, and can sometimes have a dingy feel. It is often not the first place you would think of renovating, but there is no reason why your wine cellar can’t be an attractive and stylish place that you can enjoy visiting and that you wouldn’t mind showing off to friends or relatives.

The benefit of updating a wine cellar is that a whole new space need not be created. You already have something there as a basis and you will probably know from what is there already the way in which you want to use the space. You will have an idea of what you like and don’t like about the space, and possibly what you would like in the future.
